Earnings are IN and Quite Good!!!

As promised McDonald's released its' 3rd Quarter Earnings today.  The numbers were quite good and some areas of interest listed on the McDonald's Investor Page are:

"Global comparable sales increased 6.0%, with the U.S. up 5.3%, Europe up 4.1% and Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa up 8.1%

Consolidated operating income increased 8% (11% in constant currencies) over the prior year

Diluted earnings per share were $1.29, up 12% (15% in constant currencies) over the prior year

Returned $1.4 billion to shareholders through share repurchases and dividends"

The good earnings report had a positive impact on the stock price as MCD closed today at $78.44 up $1.03 (or +1.33%).  Huge daily gains over yesterday's close.

Mickey D's exceeded Mr. Kalinowski's prediction (see my 10/18 post) of third quarter earnings per share estimate of $1.27 by posting actual figures of $1.29 per share.  Way to go McDonald's!!!

JUST FOR FUN TRIVIA QUESTION:

Now, please don't go looking for the answer, just take an educated guess...

Approximately how many seeds do you think are on a McDonald's Sesame Seed Bun???

Make your guesses, and I'll give the correct answer on the next post and we will see who gets the closest.

  1. Hey Tammy, do you think that part of that profit was the introduction of the fruit smoothies and the new coffees? I am wondering because up here in Eastern Kentucky, they just brought back the McRib and people here are going nuts. I think McDonalds profits might show a huge margin again this next quarter. By the way, if I remember right, it was somewhere between 175 and 180 seeds per Big Mac bun - it depended on what bakery made them for what part of the country.

  2. Yes, I do think those new products made an impact. Here is an excerpt from the McDonald's website article I listed above, "In the third quarter, the nationwide promotion of McCafe Frappes and Smoothies, McDonald's classic core favorites and the everyday affordability of the Dollar Menu were key contributors to the segment's robust comparable sales growth and 7% increase in operating income." They periodically bring the McRib back here too, and people always go crazy for them, but they never keep it on the menu permanently. Guess they know that periodically teasing people with it allows for better sales overall. I think you'll be surprised at the sesame seed count!!!

  3. I may surprise you but I do not like the mcrib sandwich! But I love the fries! Lucian's guess of the sesame seeds I thought was probably about right but I will guess about 200 also.
